1. Reset the Routine
We start inching bedtime a little earlier each week and easing into a version of our school morning rhythm—nothing too rigid, just enough to help everyone adjust. I also like to do small closet purges, clean out the car and junk drawers so everything feels organized. I have just a small ongoing list of things I’d like to get done around the house before the busyness kicks back in.
2. Slowly Gather Supplies
Rather than wait for the last-minute scramble, I pick up a few school supplies and needs throughout the month. Even with homeschool the kids always need fresh pencils, binders and notebooks. This is also when I check shoes and backpacks to see what still fits and what needs replacing—nothing like realizing their toes are curled up in last year’s sneakers the night before school. I just grabbed both boys' new backpacks and sneakers from adidas so they’d be ready for their co-op.
3. Make the Most of What’s Left
This one’s the most important: we protect space for summer joy. I try to plan one simple, fun summer activity each day—whether it’s a trip to the library, a morning at the pool, or ice cream on the porch after dinner. Preparation matters, but so does presence.
If you're feeling the pull of two seasons at once, you're not alone. We can prepare with intention and still pause for popsicles. Let’s welcome the school year gently, with grace for ourselves and joy in the everyday.
